COIS 2300H Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Coprocessor, Ieee Floating Point, Scientific Notation
Document Summary
Operations on integers: addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, dealing with overflow. Arithemetic for multimedia: graphics and media processing operates on vectors of 8 bit and 16 bit data, use 64 bit aadder, with partitioned carry chain. Saturating operations: on overflow, result is largest representable value. In binary: 1. xxxxxx base 2 x 2^yyyyy. Ieee: the ieee updated their floating point standard in 3008 (its superset pf the 1985 version, not all hard(cid:449)are is ieee floati(cid:374)g poi(cid:374)t (cid:272)o(cid:373)plia(cid:374)t, (cid:374)otea(cid:271)ly gpu"s, or it (cid:449)ill ha(cid:448)e a (cid:272)o(cid:373)plia(cid:374)(cid:272)e. Fp adder hardware: much more complex than integer adder, doing it in one clock cycle would take too long, much linger than integer operations, slower clock would penalize code. Fp multiplier is of similar complexity to fp adder. But uses a multiplier for significands instead of adder. Fp arithmetic hardware usally does: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
