Pass laws act & separate amenities act: 1952. Apartheid as a system of economic exploitation. Activism illegal, education suppressed . but art much harder to police. Outside white cities were large black slums. Brotowski, towards a poor theatre / brooks, the empty space. The township musical comes to the white city. Toured all across south africa for black and white audiences. One of the most frequently revived african plays.
