The contradictions of these policies led to a decade of conflict, and conspiracies. And to deal with them jefferson often used the might of big government power to press for his vision, something he theoretically despised. Simple man who believed in a simple government. Jefferson"s major goal was to dismantle the federalist government structure and return to small government. He eliminated the taxes on whiskey and imports. Cut the national debt in half and shrunk the armed forces. The case of marbury c. madison established the principle of judicial review .
