Daimyo swore allegiance to the shogun: onin war (1467-77, warring states period (146701568, reuniicaion (1534-1600) Wife and children would need to stay in edo. Always travelling, spending money: under the 4th shogun gained more rights. Could adopt a son if they had no heir.
