Japan and the second world war: rise of militarism. Sino-japanese war 1894-5; caused japan to gain internaional respect: russo-japanese war, 1904-1905; japan became an imperial power. Domesic depression prior to the world depression, 1926-1927; japan felt the efects of the great depression much stronger because they were already weak. 1929-1931; exports dropped 50%; real incomes dropped; unemployment rose. 1931 hokkaido famine: rise of fascism in europe. People started to quesion whether democracy was the right system for. Japanese blamed poliical paries for parliamentary democracy for depression. Rise of hitler and mussolini in europe: manchuria. Control on manchuria is seen as key to japan"s survival. Japanese investment = 75% of manchuria"s total investment. 40% of japan"s trade with china was focused on manchuria. Bufer between soviet union and japan: rise of gmd and the success of the northern expediion. Japan did not colonize manchuria formally, but inluenced in other ways.
