My lai massacre (1968): village in south vietnam; over 400 civilians killed. Iniial media coverage in 1968 showed the mission as being successful- said they defeated the viet cong in the village. Included these in slideshows he put together caused no commoion because no one believed it americans couldn"t do this. Media coverage in 1969, including photographs in life magazine: by the fall of 1969 the event was brought back into the media images were used along with the news story. The images in life looked like a photo album from hell, deliberate slaughter: describes scenes huts being touched with lighters, c carved on chest, soldiers striping 13 year old girl. Eligible for parole 3 years ater trial released. The vietnamese people were forcing the american soldiers to commit horriic acts. The american tragedy : nixon and other american leaders would argue that my lai was an isolated incident, war itself cannot be viewed in these terms.
