Suburbs: changes were not inevitable, they were encouraged by policies. Housing shortage: very litle home construcion, at the end of the war, demobilized troops, baby boom staring, couples marrying at younger ages. Gi bill of 1944 (and home mortgages: creates a veterans mortgage system- help soldiers purchase homes. Long term mortgage loans: lowered the iniial down payment that was required. 1950s, president eisenhower appoints a commitee to invesigate the naions highway requirements. Interstate highway act: federal government paid 90% of the cost. Limited funded for public transportaion: provides greater access to highways, creates new freeways, decreases travel imes. People can now live further away from where they work: used mass producion techniques to build new suburban neighborhoods, worked like a factory. One person did the same job over and over again. Strange rules- designed for conformity: mow their lawn once a week, couldn"t hang their wash outside during the weekends, homeownership could ight the cold war.
