Born in balimore, maryland in 1895 parents were german immigrants. Working at the naional bank of balimore when the war broke out. Gunther family became targets of ani-german seniments. He did not voluntarily enlist in the us armed forces in april 1917: may 1917 the selecive service act came into efect, gunther was conscripted in september 1917. Assigned to the 313th regiment, part of the 157th brigade of the 79th infantry division: worked as a supply sergeant. He did not like his work condiions in france were horrible: wrote leters home saying so. Caught by censors demoted to private. In september 1919 his unit was sent to the western front: wanted to bring back his rank volunteered to be the runner. By the last day of the war gunther"s unit was sill ighing on the front: aware the war was coming to an end chance came for promoion that day.
