The 80 richest people own the same wealth as the 3. 5 billion poorest people. While global capitalism remained in place the capacity to transcend gender inequality was limited- the exploitation sustained oppression: marxist feminism (cid:523)about something else maybe (cid:524, material conditions: economic structures that underlie the social organizational of capitalism. Model production, inequality between classes, primacy of private property, international division of labour. Failed to go deeper and consider the power relations at the centre of the family. Gender and development approach (gad) (ignored labour of women in the home) Its hostility to capitalism gave it little traction in the community of development practitioners (marxian perspective, wanted to replace capitalism with socialism) It ignored or downplayed how different power systems have interacted and contributed to women"s oppression (focus too narrow: late 1980s- present, gad emerged as a critique of the wid approach and was inspired by socialist feminism. Men and masculinities have to be recognized.
