Throughout history, about 14,400 wars have taken place. 1945-2000: concentration of wars is in the global south. Since the 1960s, most wars have been intrastate. The military capacity of the opponents used to be the target - now, civilian targets are the target. Common for 90% of people killed to be non-combatants. Violent conflict is now rarely interstate, but is either internationalized internal or purely internal in character. Conflicts may or may not involve violence. War: the most advanced state of conflict. Conflict: tension between opposing views, interests, or wills. Sipri (stockholm international peace research institute) calls it major armed conflict (war) Has to be about critical power and/or territory. As conflict escalates and economies collapse, we see: An increase in government spending towards police and military expenditure, and away from social spending (which, most of the time, benefits the poor) A worsening provisioning of basic goods and services. Women in particular face additional demands on their time and work.
