IDST 2500H Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Agroecology, Political Ecology, Junk Food
Document Summary
Distinction between industrial food (large scale food), and organic however the distinction should be between organic and non-organic and between industrial and small- scale/artisanal. Industrial agriculture can be organic when it is organic, it is not sustainable (therefore, organic does not equal sustainable). Small-scale agriculture can be non-organic but have a very low impact on the environment it is possible to make it sustainable you must question whether it is low or high impact on the ecology. You can have a low impact, non-organic small-scale agriculture and have it be sustainable. Food traders can be global and local local trade can be sold as locally based prices, etc. Industrial manufacturing occurs on a very large scale, whilst small-scale manufacturing can occur on a local scale (they can be sold within local economies, or sold beyond local economies as a form of trading).
