Dry, hard fecal matter difficult to pass straining, discomfort: want to reduce the straining or discomfort. Cathartic: rapid evacuation of bowel e. g. before a procedure. Bulk-forming produce bm in 1-3 days. Lubricant produce bm in 6-12 hours. Stimulant produce bm in 2-6 hours. Most of the 3 classifications can be used for the following indications: painful elimination - may worsen hemorrhoids, bleeding, and damage. Prevent straining that puts pressures on the cvs (straining may cause an mi: elderly (bulk-forming laxatives only) Allow them to more gently produce a bm: anti-helmintic treatment (when patients have received treatment for worms) Laxative will make the exit of worms quicker out of the body: empty bowel for procedures (use cathartic/stimulant type laxative) E. g. with colonoscopy: modify effluent in patients with an ostomy bag. Keeps everything moving through, prevent blockages: prevent fecal impaction in patients who are bedridden, poison treatment. Activated charcoal that is used to neutralize poison can cause constipation.
