Seated so they are facing the front wall of the cave. Behind them is a projection device - a high wall with a fire and people who are carrying cutout things that are projected as shadows on the front wall of the cave where everyone shackled can see. The people don"t think they are seeing shadows, they think that it is real. This, in the eyes of plato, is the condition of the ordinary person throughout their whole life.
