Today we are going to introduce our unit on categorical logic, by looking at categorical statements, and venn diagrams. We will introduce each of the four standard forms of categorical statement, and learn how to translate many english sentences into standard categorical form. We will also learn how to use venn diagrams to represent the information contained in standard from categorical statements. Finally, we will learn how to use venn diagrams to encode the information contained in the premises of categorical syllogisms, as a means of testing categorical syllogisms for the all important logical property of validity. Square of opposition: a, e, i and o, sentences bear certain important relationships to each other which are captured in what is called the square of opposition. If you take a symbolic logic course, you will go into the square of opposition in much greater detail.
