Document Summary
Perception is based on (the association of) sensory atoms in memory via repeated, prior joint occurrences". Structuralism cannot explain apparent motion" (phil effect) Ventral stream- tallows you to know what something is. Perception results from the interaction between the intrinsic structure of the stimulus and the intrinsic structure of the brain. Perception is not built up from sensations but is a result of perceptual organization. The whole is greater or different than the sum of its parts , you cant predict it. (emergent property) Every stimulus pattern is seen in such a way that the resulting structure is as simple as possible. We tend to separate the important aspects of the figure from the surroundings (background). We focus or give our attention to the figure. Real or imagined contour lines separate the figure and ground. Proximity is the grouping of elements that are close to eacth other to form an overall figure or pattern.
