○
His first job involved neurological research as assistant to the famous physiologist, Ernst Brucke
(1819-1892)
•
Symptoms might be paralysis of parts of the body, loss of speech, blindness
▪
Neuroses: health problems that did not appear to have an organic cause
○
Freud returned to Vienna and set up his medical practice as a specialist in neuroses (using
hypnosis as one of several treatments)
○
Freud spent the winter of 1885-1886 studying in Paris with French neurologist Jean Charcot
•
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939)
Freud begins to collaborate with Josef Breuer (1842-1925)
•
Before working with Freud, Breuer had developed a therapy for neuroses which he called
Catharsis (the "talking cure")
•
Breuer was successful with the treatment of a patient known as ANNA O (Bertha Pappenheim)
•
Influenced by this case, Breuer and Freud developed a preliminary "Theory of Neuroses"
○
Theory proposed the existence of 2 systems of consciousness
○
The normal wakeful system of consciousness
1)
The dream system (unconscious)
2)
In normal individuals there is normal regulation between the two systems (sleep and
wakefulness)
○
With neuroses there is disregulation, the dream system invades the wakeful system
○
Trauma was defined as some unpleasant event, which caused over-stimulation of
the nervous system and to defend, the individual may REPRESS the memory of this
event
▪
According to their theory, disregulation is the result of TRAMA
○
It is the existence of repression that produces neurotic symptoms
○
Cathartic method consisted of the patient talking themselves out of their symptoms
•
Breuer & Freud published their theory in 1895, it was their last collaboration due to a
disagreement of about the nature of trauma
•
Psychoanalysis Emerges
In the late 1890's Freud developed his psychoanalytic therapy
•
Not all patients can be hypnotized
○
So he adapted the cathartic method
○
Often taking dreams as the starting point
▪
As well as free association method
○
Early in his career he used hypnosis to treat his problems
•
Psychotherapy
Freud's first major psychoanalytic work was his "Interpretation of Dreams", published in 1900
•
Unconscious
○
Pre-conscious
○
Conscious
○
In this book he introduced his first model of the mind:
•
Study of Dreams
Refers to what is in one's thoughts at any given moment
•
Preconscious- refers to memories or thoughts that are not currently conscious
•
Consciousness
