Believed that schools and parents had responsibilities for teaching children the self control that would make them effective citizens. Worried that too much self discipline would stifle children"s initiative. P: thought that experience could no be the source of knowledge because humans senses are too fallible. Argued instead that children are born with innate knowledge of many concrete objects (animals/people), same with abstractions (love, courage). Children"s sensory experiences simply triggered knowledge that they had since birth. A: denied the existence of innate knowledge, believing instead that knowledge is rooted in perceptual experience. Parents should instruct, reward and discipline kids. Newborns are endowed with an innate sense of justice and morality hat unfolds naturally as the kid grows. Move through developmental stages - infancy, childhood and adolescence. 5-7 years old, no longer needed consent from parents to work. Reformers made an act that put more kids in school.
