Document Summary

More ego waves = more eye movements. May be linked to the visual aspect of our brains. Two nuclei: subcoerulear nucleus, sends projections to the magnocellular nucleus, magnocellular nucleus. If you stimulate the medulla area, you observe paralysis. If you lesion it, you see loss of paralysis. Rem off cells also in the pons. They are quiet during rem, and active during the other stages. Concentrated in the locus coeruleus, and use norepinephrine. Rem off cells become weaker the longer we"re asleep. Some of the neurotransmitters most important for the production of waking and sleeping. Serotonin was once though to be a kay nt for nrem sleep, but we now know that its main role is in sleep onset (dampens responses to sensory input) Biological rhythm: any variable physiological process with phases that reoccur periodically. Help us to maintain homeostasis (constant environment) Sampling method vs. continuous recording: sample at different times during the night.
