Educaional pracices play a major role in the process by which people"s lives and ideniies are constructed as individuals subjects. Most school learning revolves around individual competencies. The individual pupil is monitored, expected to complete assignment, graded, promoted from one grade to the next, and disciplined. Educaional credenials are acquired on a compeiive basis, separaing and disinguishing the idenity and performance of each person from all others. Historically common schools prepared boys and girls for diferent roles overtly. In 1865 in upper canada girls could go to school but were not allowed in classical courses which were needed for university.
