3 theorist developed different theoretical approaches to help us understand the formation of modern industrial society: emile durkheim and functionalism. Perspectives stressed the necessary interconnectivity of all its elements. Individuals behaviour was not the same as collective behaviour and that studying collective behaviour was very different then an i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual(cid:859)s actions. Called the communal beliefs, morals and attitudes of a society the collective conscience: believed in social integration the strength of ties that people have to their social groups. Each member of society plays a necessary role in keeping society alive. Preindustrial societies, durkheim explained, were held together by mechanical solidarity, a type of social order maintained through a minimal division of labour and a common collective consciousness.
