A crisis of masculinity : men are under threat by various things, men are struggling (the telegraph, save the male! World wars era and the crisis of masculinity * this might sound a bit familiar: 1900"s -1930"s. Immigrants taking men"s jobs: suffrage taking men"s voting power, people of colour overtaking white men, world war 1 and men"s bodies, depression destroying working class men. Post world war ii and the crisis of masculinity : 1945-1980, suburbanization making men"s lives less exciting, consumerization making men shoppers, fatherhood and monogamy making men sexually restrained. 3 ways to deal with that crisis : reject hegemonic masculinity: sds (newton), play boy, do everything you can to not conform to it. Incorporate the critique: the narcissistic man the promise keepers (newton: double down: the new lad , men"s rights movements, don"t need women forget them. Current crisis of masculinity: contemporary social life.
