Lecture thirteen - the end of the depression. Even before pearl harbour, it was pretty clear that the usa was going to enter the war. Pearl harbour solved division instantly, and unified the usa. How long would it last in the stress of the war. Americans hoped something more than unity would come. Americans self-image wasn"t very good, there was a crisis of confidence. Americans were still not thrilled by the war. Harry hopkins thought the war would actually bring on a lower standard of living. Businessmen still worried - reluctance to help and expand with war efforts. Depression psychology > but the depression somewhat worked to their advantage. Vast pool of idle manpower, reservoir of physical productive capacity. 50% of car production was idle until 1941. All of the idle resources could be used now, rescued american economy and gotten it ready for conversion towards war production. Mobilization > peacetime society, to a people at war.
