The current government of greece wants them back, because they argue that these artifacts should have never left athens. The museum disagrees with this, arguing that they took these legally, and are protecting them. They establish that the earl elgin had a diplomatic role, was the ambassador to the ottoman empire. But since the 1840s greece and turkey have been at war with each other.
