English 2720 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Big Bill Broonzy, Harriet Ann Jacobs, Bildungsroman
Document Summary
Published in 1861 by harriet jacobs, or linda brent. Hers is unusual in that most female slave narratives were published after the civil war. Her narrative was not re discovered until the 1970"s. Female authors stressed the need to protect and form bond with their children. Jacob"s used the pseudonym lina brent, and does not name her slave holders, unlike douglass. She still had family in the area, and she needed to protect her children, thus why she does not name them. Female narratives were given generally less historical credibility than male narratives. Female narrative seemed to not met the standard" of male narrative. Female authors provided first-hand accounts of the sexual exploitation of slave women. Men too were sexually exploited, but not as often. Female narratives typically emphasized the help that they received from other people. Males tend to focus on the i", women on the them". Her grandmother, aunt marthy, is a huge source of support and love.
