Vikings were well known for their long ships. They were able to navegate using the stars. Vikings were involved in trade and commerce. Found in newfoundland, viking gold and jewels and so on. Major trade sites of vikings, birka, sweden. 856-875 danish vikings attacked and began to settle in england. Guthrum defeated and accepts christian baptism and peace with alfred the great (defeated guthrum) (871-899). What alfred does to survive the danes then conquer them: the fryd (peasants were committed to 6 months military services) farmers, servants ect. Instead of them ghting, cuz they were not very good, they set up burhs (garrisons every 20 miles). All wealthy english had to become thanes (they served the king directly). Danish ship, and english carpenters combined both designs. The revolt of danegeld in 892-896 supressed thanks to alfred"s reforms. He invited monks to come settle and help restored english monasteries. This was kept up until the mid-12th century.
