Document Summary

The chroniclers of rome wrote the history in a different period with a different audience. The problem then is that the histories that we have a different view. However, with such reflections, we can thus understand what they thought about the past. How they wrote about their own histories tells us something about them as a result. It then also tells us about how the republicans saw themselves. It then allows us to understand motivations, concerns, and public life within rome. The code of the twelve tables was a legal document written in 450 bce. We know this as they mention a solar eclipse. It was open only to patricians until the mid 3rd century. This is significant as unlike other early sources, these lists and calendars lined up with other sources from the period, including greek ones. Copies of it were kept in circulation well after it was published, and quoted by other roman authors.
