Document Summary

Slavery was a system that in some ways, shaped the entire nation. Both north and south gained economic benefit form the slave system, and almost every aspect of slavery touched both regions. Why it existed, and if it was profited are things to be debated. Slavery is a part of american history that many ordinary people would like to forget, because it raises painful issues about blame, victimization, etc. It also doesn"t fit into the national narrative of liberty, freedom, and equality. The story of slavery in the modern era begins with the european powers and their drive to control africa, because they saw potential profits in slave trade. In the 16th sand 17th century, western european nations set up monopolies on slavery, allowing certain companies to traffic slaves. The portuguese were the leaders at first, but they faced major competition from the dutch and the british; the people with the best shipping capabilities.
