Document Summary

In the south, there was a reliance on an agricultural economy, over a market economy in the north. The cotton kingdom was the richest in the nation, but the wealth was not evenly distributed. The south could be all states that used slaves for labour. It could be all states who formed the confederacy, which would not include all slave holding states. We could also use cultural criteria, which could be complicated as well. The regions underwent a switch from the colonial to the mid 19th century. The puritans settled the north with a religious, conservative establishment. Then, by the antebellum period, the regional identities has switched. The north was undergoing rapid social reform, while the south was the centre of steady conservative order. Regional identity is not so much that you can come up with a clear definition. The antebellum period is latin for before the war", which was from 1830 - 1860.
