HIST 2600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Anne Hutchinson, John Calvin, Anglo-Irish Big House
Document Summary
The first english settlers were the pilgrims embodied in myths. These pilgrims were a small sect of religious radicals, believing the church of england was so corrupt that it could not be reformed. They first tried moving to holland but they feared even holland was too corrupt for the society they wanted. The pilgrims landed on pilgrims rock in november 1620. William radford was their leader ,and they established the mayflower compact named after the ship. It was a document in which the men agreed to form a civil government. It could be argued this is the first document of self government. The relied on the natives, which gave us the imagery of thanksgiving. However, despite their principals, their principals were absorbed into a larger group of puritans who arrived after 1630. They were puritans because they wanted to purify the church, believing the church had too many catholic rituals. They followed the teachings of john calvin - calvinists.
