Spain and france were the ultimate competitors for this territory. The success could be presumed upon the structure of the british empire, and economical reasons. Named as such because charles the 2nd was restored to the throne. They included the middle colonies and the carolinas. They were land given to groups or individuals as a reward for the support offered to the crown to restore charles. They had great freedom to run the cosines as they saw fit. Each of these colonies tended to embrace religious toleration, and some sort of self government. From an economic perspective, propitiators promised they would promote trade and liberal access to land. All proprietors wanted to ensure economic success of their colonies.
