Document Summary

Long before the movies, early silent movies spoke of the battle between the sexes. Women began to make their own films, as comedies ridiculed the want to vote. Most films have disappeared, leaving behind only reviews and stills. The surviving films give a good vision of women, sometimes liberating, other times a mockery of women, abandoning their families. Suffrage comodies found hold in how they got the vote. They satirized the women"s british attempt to get the attention of parliament. They painted them as chaos in an orderly world. She was painted as a man-hater, breaking up her own daughter"s engagement. Though it allowed women to vote at the end of it, it made the conclusion bittersweet in its portrayal of suffragettes. It was sensationalized and ridiculed the efforts of women who were trying to vote, especially in the south.
