Document Summary
Database technology-collection of related data organized in a way that makes it valuable and useful. Any type of analysis that is done is based on data available in the database. Database management system (dbms): creating, storing, maintaining and accessing database files. Every data file is separate, is not integrated. All data is integrated and files are grouped together. Pool of related data is shared by multiple applications. Advantages: minimal data redundancy, improved data consistency, improved data quality, improved data accessibility, enforcement of standards, improved data sharing, increased productivity, program/data independence. External data-comes from sources such as competitors, customers, suppliers, distribution networks, tax records and labor or population statistics. Business intelligence (bi): used in law enforcement as well as in the business world. (system generates bi reports that help pinpoint crime patterns and locations. Physical view: how data is stored on and retrieved from storage media.
