November 19 2013 – History III WolfgangAmadeus Mozart • Born in 1756 (around the same time that Haydn started his professional career) • Child prodigy (traveling as a professional musician 1760s-1773) • Absorbed everything and soon became the master of all styles • Rare to be young with such talent • Audience was real musicians (contact with influential musicians) • Leopold (his father) was a respected violinist, wrote the violin treatise, educated Mozart • Produced 600 compositions and gained incredible influence, but died at 35 • Not a great reception while he was alive • Bad with his money, bad lifestyle • He had a super ego • J.C Bach: galant style, contrasting themes influenced Mozart • Haydn favored similar themes • Sammartini symphonic writing influenced Mozart Mozart’s innovative compositions • First to start incorporating ‘outdated’music (absorbed counterpoint and learned style from J.S. Bach) (Absorbed choral writing from Handel) • Master of every regional and national styles •
