Document Summary

String quartet (musical culture moving to public and into the home) it was the most significant genre of chamber ensembles (sophisticated writing). It emerged near the end of the eighteenth century in germany. It wasn"t until 1780 that the string quartet got its name. These are now notes that i took on the handout pertaining to haydn"s chronological string quartet output. 4th point: not meant to be taken seriously (light chamber music) With opus 9 quartets he standardized the 4 movement form and popularity grew for him. 17 / op. 20 : all written in the same period. 20 in 1772, first time he used the fugue in op. 4, music doesn"t" sound serious but haydn was taking composition more seriously (technique of baroque without heaviness)
