Document Summary
The sentimental model - the 1950"s nuclear family. Nuclear family - this is the ideal european colonial family structure, in which there is a household consisting of a mother, a father, and their children. The family is sustained by a male breadwinner whose earnings support all dependents, women and children alike. Even when women contribute, males were still considered the breadwinner. Also gives the idea that the family unit functions on its own, away from extended family and friends. It does not take into account other cultures. There was an emphasis on the extended family, which included kin beyond the nuclear family, whether inside or outside the household. They had a division of labour that did not privilege men. These roles and responsibilities were also divided on the nuclear household in the way we see power and work.
