Document Summary
Bordo reframes bourdieu and foucault, theorizing the body. The theory that good looking people will marry well, be promoted, and be more successful. Foucault has the idea that the body is a site of discipline. Biopower is something that modern life can be characterized by. For him, the modern body is one that must be discipline, trained, shaped, an in keeping with societal norms about masculinity and femininity. To be fit is moral, and you are good, as opposed to if you are out of shape. For example, if you smoke or drink, then you are disciplined by society, and eventually yourself, because it goes against everything. The bodily regimes that we do, like how we move, if we brush our teeth, etc, all reflect number of things. The societal norms that we see are written on the body and are specific to a time and place.
