ANSC 100 Zoonoses, One Medicine and Emerging Diseases
Emerging Disease: disease / infection whose incidicen has increased or is epectd to increase in a defined period and
location
Qualitative Emergence vs. Quantitative Emergence **TABLE ON SLIDE***
Zoonosis and Early Vet Medicine:
Development of modern vet medicine was founded on the study and eradication of zoonoes as much as on
diseases specific to animals only
oLive stock diseases and / or diseases shared with humans
Bovine Tuberculosis (Bovine TB)
Mycobacterium bovis in cattle, sheep, wildlife
Slow-growing aerobic bacteria
Causes TB in humans
Can jump from cattle to humans or other mammals
Transmitted in milk or in aerosol droplets (feces, urine, other fluids)
In humans, it localizes in bones if contracted through milk
oAlso causes pneumonia and GI infections
Affected thousands of Canadians before it was eradicated
Signification Public Health concern
Considered eradicated in domestic animals
Surveillance continues through occasional texting, export testing etc.

Brucellosis
Brucella species in sheep, cattle, pigs, dogs
A highly contagious zoonosis
Gram negative, rod shaped, nonmotile bacteria
In milk, placenta other fluids (animal secretions)
Causes fever, inflammation and can cause sterility
Significant Public Health Concern
Declared eradicated in 1985
Surveillance continues through occasional texting, export testing etc.

Document Summary

Emerging disease: disease / infection whose incidicen has increased or is epectd to increase in a defined period and. Qualitative emergence vs. quantitative emergence **table on slide*** Development of modern vet medicine was founded on the study and eradication of zoonoes as much as on diseases specific to animals only: live stock diseases and / or diseases shared with humans. Can jump from cattle to humans or other mammals. Transmitted in milk or in aerosol droplets (feces, urine, other fluids) In humans, it localizes in bones if contracted through milk: also causes pneumonia and gi infections. Affected thousands of canadians before it was eradicated. Surveillance continues through occasional texting, export testing etc. Virus is spread by the movement of birds and products. Important defence is establishing good biosecurity measures on poultry farms: biosecurity is poor in many developing countries (asia) Fighting cocks (highly prized, often transported long distances) Importance of tropics as reservoir of disease emergence:
