What is animal welfare? Is it the same as animal health?
Five Freedoms (1993) -not in any particular order
1. Freedom from thirst, hunger and malnutrition
2. Freedom from discomfort (due to the environment)
3. Freedom from pain, injury and disease (health)
4. Freedom to express normal behaviour for the species
5. Freedom from fear and distress (STRESS!!!!)
Distress: negative form of stress (-)
Eustress: positive form of stress (+)
Positive stress causes motivation
Fight or flight aids in survival

Poor welfare, resulting from a wide variety of different causes, may make disease more likely, often initiating immunosuppression (more likely to get sick) Definitions of animal welfare have varied among scientists. Wide term that embraces both physical and mental we being of the animal. Any attempt to evaluate the welfare must take into account: scientific evidence concerning the feelings of the animal. Oie"s definition of animal welfare: the state of the animal. Broom"s definition: the welfare of an animal is its state as regards to its attempt to cope with its environment. Welfare can be measured on a continuum from very good to very poor. Only assess welfare of an individual at a given point in time (welfare is dynamic and changes) Duncan"s definition: welfare is all to do with what the animal feels. Used to refer more to the individual"s perception of its state.
