Document Summary

Gas exchange: uptake o2 & release co2, resp area ~ 70 sq. m. (750 sq. t) Filtraion, tempreture regulaion and humidiicaion of inspired air. Divided in 2: conducing (nasal cavity smallest bronchioles of lungs, respiratory (respiratory branches, delicate air sacs & alveoli where gas exchange occurs) Structural organizaion: larynx = narrowest part in adults, upper resp. system. Condiion the air by iltering, warming, and humidifying it to protect more delicate conducion and exchange surfaces: lower resp. system. Funcional organizaion: conducion directs air b/w lungs & external environment, repiratory porion only at the very end of the airway. Turbinates (nasal conchae: cause turbulence in inspired air, air slows down and contacts moist warm nasal cavity walls. Turbulance is essenial to iltraion, humidiicaion, and warming of air: concha/conhae 3 pairs of scroll like bones that project into nasal cavity. Superior and middle conchae are part of ethmoid and inferior conchae are separate bones: upper respiratory cavity.
