ANTHR310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Proletariat, Bourgeoisie, Unilineality
Document Summary
Political economy: grows from marxism, has to do with class relationships. Nearly all societies have a gendered division of labor, even if some men and women do the same jobs. When women move into previously male-dominated jobs, those jobs tend to be feminized and devalued. Even in modern societies, there is a lot of division. Even if men and women work in the same sphere, women are paid less, given different responsibilities: double shift: women, even if they have a fulltime job, they are expected to take on domestic roles as well. Very common for women to work in food/cooking because they have been conditioned to know how to do it. Mode of production, means of production, relations of production: mode of production: refers to the varied ways that human beings collectively produce the means of subsistence in order to survive and enhance social being.
