Document Summary
All lawyers or all engineers are homogenous (a stereotype) Problem: when we assume a category is homogenous and specific instances will always resemble that category. Some categories are not homogenous and instances will vary from the category. Since each coin toss is independent of the previous toss, there is always a 50% chance that you will get the one you want. A mistaken belief that the probability of any given random event, such as winning or losing a game of chance is influenced by previous random events. A belief that a certain course of events will continue. People who gamble on basketball games assuming that a team who is on a winning streak will continue to win. There is still a 50% chance that they will win. Negative: as one variable increases, the other decreases. Positive: both variables moving in the same direction. A perceived pattern where one variable seems to predict another.
