After 100 years of research, we still don"t have a good handle what attention is. Attention is an umbrella word for many things (rubric) Spotlight - illuminated one of that space while everything else is dark. Zoom lens - pull attention to one things will clear it out. Filter - all information coming in and filters some of it out. Being ballistic (once stimulus occurs, process is going to happen) Cost you very little compared to other cognitive processes. Involve in making decisions if a competing stimulus pops up. I. e. stroop task = reading color on the font. Limited attention entering a new environment where you are unfamiliar. Disengage what you were doing and redirect attention to where your friend is. Scanning the environment, attention moves all over the place. Resources available is limited - processing capacity and load.
