Document Summary

In general terms, a mutation is some kind of a change. In the context of biological studies of organisms, a mutation is a change in the sequence of nucleotides in the genomic dna of a cell. Because the change is in the dna it is inherited in all of the offspring of the cell in which the change occurs. Other changes in a cell or organisms are not mutations, in this technical sense of the word. There are different kinds of mutations, classi ed on a number of criteria: what the change in the dna is, the effect of the change on the products of transcription and translation. Consider that dna has a number of functions and that all of those functions are dependent on the sequence of bases in the dna polymer. Dna strands can be broken: radiation-induced, oxidation-induced. If not repaired part of chromosome will be lost at mitosis. Rejoining depends on the broken ends having microhomology .
