Document Summary

Evolution process that change population of organism over time. Dar(cid:449)in"s theory of e(cid:448)olution: more offspring are produced each generation than the environment can support, there is variation in physical, physiological and behavioral traits among individuals in a population. Some of this variation is heritable (passed on to offspring: some traits will give some individuals an advantage over the other members of the population. Individuals who possess those traits will have a higher change of surviving and reproducing than the other members of the population, increasing their fitness. Fitness: the relative genetic contribution of individuals to future generations: traits that result in increased fitness will become more common within a population over subsequent generations. Characteristics are passed from parent to offspring in the form of discrete packets of information: passed down through genes, there are alternative form of genes=> alleles. Gene: discrete region/loci of dna; the molecular unit of heritability. Alleles: an alternate form of the same gene.
