BIOL 208 (March 24, 2014) • Island Biography o Why study islands?  It makes certain ecological questions simple • Clear boundary  the island IS the community • Tend to be more discrete o Dispersal limitations = fewer species (that are able to reach the island in the first place) • Latitudinal Gradients o Taxa diversity varies in a higher predictability when it comes to latitude changes o Competitive exclusion is less common at low latitudes (a theory) o Linked to filters and community assembly • Isolation in the boreal o Taking an area that was initially homogenous and creating islands in the landscape  Clearing out vegetation around a “matrix” (not a “patch” in this case)  Some vegetation is removed in some places but left alone in other places • Random distances from each other o Animal crossing bridges re
