Document Summary

Sexes are based on different intraspecific strategies for relative investment in a gamete. If you make the large gametes, you"re a female;if you make the small gametes, you"re a male o: anisogamy= different sized gametes o isogamy= same size gametes these are not male or female. Gamete size can lead to conflict over mating. It benefits males to mate with more than one, or many, females. However it rarely benefits the female to mate with many males. In general, males are eager and females are coy. He suggested that competition for access to mates could select for behaviour and morphology, however he considered sexual selection different from natural selection, while we consider it to be a subtype of natural selection. Male vs. male competition would be considered intrasexual competition within the sex . While competing to attract more females would be considered intersexual competition. For broadcast spawning, competition may be a simple lottery.
