Notes: BIOL 495­January 8, 2014 By: Victory Obiefuna “How to critique a paper” • Introduction o Summarize  Objective/aims/questions  Background  Hypothesis and predictions • Is the hypothesis clear? Did they make their predictions  clear?  Relevance and importance (subjective. There can also be a  subjective answer) • Materials and Methods o Is it clearly written? o Proper control, can this study be replicated, what is the experimental  design? o Response variable. Relevant? o Sample size?  o Randomize o Pseudoreplication?  When you have multiple things that are being exposed to the same  conditions, that is really just a sample size of one.  This is used to “trick” you into thinking that the sample size is  larger than it is o Statistics  P value = 0.05. less or equal to 0.05  ▯significant. More than 0.05  ▯ not significant. o Feel free to suggest improvements • Results o Summarize what was found o Compare the results to the methods to understand the relevance of them o Are the results consistent with the pre
