CHEM 101 Lecture 10
Ionization Energies (IE):
Is the energy required for the complete removal of 1 mol of electrons from 1 mol of gaseous
atoms or ions
oAtoms with love IE form cations
oAtoms with high IE form anions (except noble gases)
oAcross a period IE INCREASES
oDown a group IE DECREASES
Trends in Ionization Energies:
oGoing across (L to R) = IE increases
Electrons are added to same energy level – ineffective shielding while Z
increases
Need more energy to remove electron
oGoing down = EI decreases
New shell
Need less energy to remove electron
Electron affinity: energy change when 1 mole electron is added to 1 mol of gaseous atoms/ions
Trends in Atomic Properties:
Important to understand Zeff, radius, EI and EA trends!!!!!!***************
Moving Down periodic table:
Zeff- decrease
Radius – increases
EI – decreases
EA – decreases
Moving Across periodic table:
