Document Summary

March 25: distributions of speeds, distributions of speeds and energy, effect of. Temperature and mass, calculation for the ratio of speeds, real gases, deviations for. Ideal gas behaviour, corrections to describe real gases. Not all molecules of gas move at the same speed(velocity). When looking at the formulas for solving for speed/velocity it"s important to know that = most probable speed, avg = average speed, rms = root mean square (this one tells us the average kinetic energy of the particles . The way to solve for this is to first square the speeds, take the average, and then take the square root. Ex: particle a: 5 m/s particle b: 3 m/s, the average here is 4 m/s, when using the formula you can get the exact average speed. Rms = (5^2 + 3^2) / 2 = (34/2) = 4. 1 m/s.
