Document Summary

Special type of dipole to dipole interacion when h is atached to a strongly electronegaive atom: decreasing electronegaivity decreasing polarizaion. Must have an h bond donor and an h bond acceptor: lone pair of electronegaive elements: h bond acceptors, h delta posiive is an h donor. Leads to higher meling/boiling points than expected based on molecular mass alone (non-ionic interacions) Comparing the boiling points of molecules: ethanol, dimethyl ether, propane. Molecular weight is not very diferent (46g/mol for ethanol and dimethyl ether and 44g/mol for propane) All molecules have this type of force, extremely weak: weakest of imf, dipole (polar)/induced dipole(non-polar): 2-10 kj/mol, induced dipole(non-polar)/induced dipole(non-polar): 0. 05-40 kj/mol. Temporary polarizaion of a typically non-polar part of a molecule. Disturbance of the electron cloud of molecules caused by the applicaion of an external electric or magneic ield. Induced dipole: a caion/anion gets close to a non polar molecule in sln and results in a temporary diple.
